About Us
The Sheldon Water Department has two full time employees. Their duties include sampling and testing Sheldon’s water daily, well maintenance, water main repairs, fire hydrant repairs, meter replacement, and customer service. On average the Sheldon water plant produces 800,000 gallons of water daily. There are strict regulations set by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources that we follow to insure safe drinking water to our customers. There is an “On Call” person available at all times for any emergencies that may arise.
The Sheldon Water Department operates a 2.3 million gallon/day Iron and Manganese removal plant. The plant obtains its water from nine shallow wells (20-30 feet deep), and two deep wells (600 feet), with the combined pumping capacity of 1,400 gallons per minute. From the wells the water is pumped to the plant where potassium permanganate is added, this process helps to oxidize the iron and manganese. Fluoride is added for dental hygiene. From there it goes through aeration, this is a process of exposing the water to the atmosphere, which releases gases such as hydrogen sulfide. After aeration it passes through a detention tank to allow enough contact time for the potassium permanganate to work then it enters four slow sand filters, this is where the iron and manganese is filtered out. From the filters the water goes into a detention tank, this is where chlorine and a blended poly orthophosphate are added for corrosion control, from there it flows into a 1.3 million gallon underground clear well which allows the chlorine, contact time to disinfect the water before it is pumped to the water tower.
Four high-service pumps at the plant draw water from the clear well, pumping water to the distribution system and to the water tower, which holds 500,000 gallons. The purpose of the water tower is to assure that the system has constant pressure.
Lewis & Clark water, which we signed up for in the early 1990’s, is projected to arrive in Sheldon in 2023/24. This water is soft compared to ours, and in addition to being a great water source, Lewis & Clark’s water when blended with Sheldon will provide higher quality water for years to come.

Purpose
The most important role of Sheldon Wastewater facility is to protect the environment, including aquatic life and downstream users from harmful contamination caused by human interaction.
History
The City of Sheldon maintains over 25 miles of Sanitary sewer including seven pumping stations prior to sewage reaching the wastewater facility.
The Sheldon Wastewater Treatment Facility had an official startup July of 2019, with an Iowa DNR grade III designation. The facility consists of a mechanical bar screen, grit separation, grit washing, a four cell Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) followed by an Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system. Then finally a two-cell aerobic digester and belt filter press for treatment of solids.
