EMA

A joint mission with the Sheldon Fire Department. Emergency response, traffic control for major scenes, assistance with traffic flow during large events such as RiseFest and Celebration Days.

Mission Statement\ Dedicated to saving lives and property. To provide the community the best service possible in emergency situations with the training and knowledge we have learned, and also pass on the training and knowledge to aid in calls to come.

Organized: 1884

Community size: 5,512 in the City of Sheldon, plus four rural townships (Grant and Lynn in Sioux, and Carroll and Floyd in O’Brien).

The Sheldon Fire Company is a total volunteer service. Members consist of:

  • 1 – Chief
  • 2 – Assistant Chiefs
  • 3 – Captains
  • 3 – Lieutenants
  • 21 – Firefighters
  • 4 – Student Firefighters

We offer a high school student program with junior or senior members.

Average Calls per Year: 85

Call Types: Fires, Rescues, and Accidents.

Equipment:

  • Ladder 15: 2021 Spartan/LTC 100ft aerial platform, 2000 GPM pump, crew of 6
  • Engine 4: 1999 Spartan 1500 GPM pump, foam system, crew of 6.
  • Engine 1: 2015 Freightliner/MCB 4 wheel driver 1250 GPM pump with 500 pump n roll pump crew of 5.
  • Rescue: 2009 – Spartan/ Crimson 1500 GPM pump, with rescue tools, crew of 6.
  • Tanker – 2007 – Midwest Fire 2000 gal. 500 GPM pump. Crew

Antique Trucks: 1884 – Hose Cart, 1918 – Luverne 250 GPM Pumper, 1960 – Dodge Luverne 500 GPM Pumper

Meetings: 24 per year (Meet the 1st & 3rd Thursday night of the month)

Certifications Held by Most Members: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, EMR, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, First Responder, CPR, and Confined Spaces. There are many more also.

Territory: 81 square miles, including 2 rural townships (Carroll and Floyd in O’Brien County; Grant and Lynn in Sioux County) with mutual aid to surrounding towns within 30 miles.

The Sheldon Police Department is located in the Community Services Center, 416 9th Street, Sheldon, IA  51201. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The mission of the Sheldon Police Department is to deliver total quality service to the citizens of our community in a professional, friendly, and equitable manner which will result in a successful conclusion to all requests for service.
